Instead of simply renting space or building a traditional commercial building for our much needed office space we’ve embarked on a project to construct a building in which ninety percent of the building materials will be on-site earth, and the resulting structure will have a zero carbon footprint. We were very fortunate to have been awarded a grant for this effort which will be the 1st in the United States.
Greenspace is what we’ve named it. It will offer environmental education and continue serving underprivileged and poverty stricken families from the surrounding communities. This project has been considered of such significance that it has been endorsed by Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection, a national organization devoted to preservation of the environment.
We hope to continue serving the community by hosting educational programs for the children and families we serve. Our goal is to raise 100 folding chairs to fill Greenspace with as many that can benefit from programs like:
- Connect to College Mentoring Program which is designed to inspire at-risk, low income children to stay in school, go to college and break the cycle of poverty.
- Pomona Valley Urban Agriculture Initiative (PVUAI): Unemployed immigrants with farming expertise (whose children are in our program) will be employed raising organic fruits and vegetables for the Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County markets. For every acre of land put into production, one farm family can be supported
Miguel Bonilla, grew up in El Salvador working 14 hour days from the age of 10 to the age of 21 supervising his family’s 12 acre farm while his father worked in a mine; truly a hard working man. Yet in pursuit of more for his family he found himself in the land of opportunity struggling to support his family. Fortunately our paths crossed and we were thrilled to have been able to help him become the second farmer that was hired as part of the PVUAI initiative. Mr. Bonilla gained not just employment but an opportunity to strengthen the future of his children. His son actually became involved in our mentoring program and recently graduated from our Connect to College program is now in the joint UCLA-UC Riverside pre-med program with a bright future ahead of him.
